The two formats of oil filtration
This article sets the catalogue's two oil filter groups side by side, as the listings present them. On one side are the listings whose size is marked "Standard Spin-On Oil Filter" — five Toyota 90915 listings and three Hyundai listings. On the other are nine Toyota listings numbered in the 04152 series — 04152-31060, 04152-31080, 04152-31090, 04152-37010, 04152-38010, 04152-40060, 04152-YZZA1, 04152-YZZA5 and 04152-YZZA6 — whose listings print sizes and element construction. A further 04152 number, 04152-38020, is treated separately below, because its own size line reads "Standard Spin-On Oil Filter". Other listings sit outside both groups as printed: the Hyundai 26320 listings are elements with dimensions and cellulose/end-cap construction, and the Nissan 15208 and Perkins listings print dimensions and housing construction. The comparison below stays with what the listings state.
Construction
The size-marked listings present the filter as a single unit: their size line reads "Standard Spin-On Oil Filter", and the listing leads with the OE number, the applications and the cross references. A cartridge element listing presents the inside of a filter without a shell. The 04152-31060 listing describes the build in full: cellulose filter paper media, plastic end caps and centre tube, nitrile rubber (NBR) O-ring seals and a nitrile anti-drainback valve, sized OD70 x H81. The neighbouring listings 04152-31090 and 04152-37010 print their own sizes — OD69 x H67 and OD62 x H70 respectively.
What is renewed, as the listings present it
The two groups differ in what the ordered part consists of. An order against a size-marked listing is for the complete filter unit under that OE number. An order against one of the nine listings named above is for the element that listing presents — and, on the 04152-31060 listing, the element as listed includes its sealing parts: the 04152-31060 listing specifies nitrile rubber (NBR) O-ring seals and a nitrile anti-drainback valve within the element's construction. The listings do not print fitting instructions for either group, and this article does not add any.
Which group a listing belongs to
The listing itself states the group: the size line and the construction lines are printed per listing. In the Toyota range, Corolla appears under 90915-YZZE1 and 90915-YZZD2; it does not appear in the printed applications of any of the nine listings named above — those applications are Auris, Alphard, Avensis, Premio, Yaris, Prius, Sienna, C-HR, Matrix, Reiz, Verso and Aurion. (The separate 04152-38020 listing names Land Cruiser, Tundra and Lexus applications instead.) The same model name can appear in both groups (Yaris, for example, is named in the 90915-YZZE1 and 90915-YZZN2 listings and in two of the nine — 04152-37010 and 04152-YZZA6), which is why the catalogue's matching rule is the OE number rather than the model name. The pages for each group — spin-on oil filters and cartridge oil filters — list the series separately.
Stocking
For a distributor, the two groups stock as different units: the size-marked listings as complete filter units, the nine listings named above as elements, each with the seals its own listing prints. The cross-reference picture differs too, on the printed evidence: the 90915-YZZE1 listing prints ten cross numbers, while the 04152-31060 listing prints three — CH10158, M81 and 57173. The method of working with those numbers is covered in oil filter cross reference: how to match OE numbers.
The listings outside both groups
Two further sets of oil listings sit outside the pair this article compares, and a buyer meeting them should know where they stand. The Hyundai 26320 listings are elements: the 26320-3CAA0 listing, for example, prints a size — OD71/65 x H122 — and the cellulose-and-end-cap construction of an element listing, so the 26320 series belongs on the element side of the catalogue's presentation even though its numbers are not among the nine 04152 listings named above. The Nissan 15208 listings print dimensions — OD66 x H65 on 15208-31U0B, OD93 x H92 on 15208-BN30A — with steel-housing construction, and the Perkins listings print dimensions too: OD93 x H137 on 26550001, OD93 x H114 on 2654403 and OD76 x H142 on 2654408. Neither the Nissan nor the Perkins listings carry the "Standard Spin-On Oil Filter" size line, and neither is presented as an element. The catalogue, in other words, prints more variety than a two-format scheme suggests: a size-marked group, two element groups, and listings that state their dimensions and construction without joining either label. The comparison in this article covers the two groups the catalogue itself labels; the rest are matched, as always, on their own listings.
Delivery and samples, as listed
One commercial difference between the groups is printed on the listings themselves. A delivery window of 20–45 days appears on eight size-marked listings — 90915-YZZE1, YZZN1, YZZD2, YZZN2 and YZZD3, the two Hyundai listings that carry the size line (26300-35505 for Elantra applications and 26300-2Y500 for Forte), and 26330-4A001. None of the nine listings named above prints a delivery window; for those nine, the delivery figure a buyer works with is the company FAQ's general 30–40 days. Free samples are offered across the oil range. None of this changes what the parts are — but for a distributor planning stock, the printed window on one side and its absence on the other is a real, checkable difference between the groups as listed.
The contrast, stated plainly
Size-marked listings (five 90915, three Hyundai). The part is the complete unit under one OE number; the listings print no dimensions, so matching runs on the number and the application list; the cross sets printed are long (ten numbers on 90915-YZZE1).
The nine 04152 listings named above. On each of these listings the part presented is the element, with its seals and valve as listed in its construction; the listings print sizes per element — OD70 x H81 on 04152-31060, OD69 x H67 on 04152-31090, OD62 x H70 on 04152-37010 — and shorter cross sets (three numbers on 04152-31060). The 04152-38020 listing is not one of the nine: its size line reads "Standard Spin-On Oil Filter".
Neither group is presented by the catalogue as filtering "better" — the listings print no comparative filtration figures between the groups, and this article invents none. The practical difference for a buyer is what the order unit is and what the listing prints about it.
Identification on paper
On paper, the distinction is made listing by listing: in this catalogue's Toyota listings, the five size-marked listings carry 90915 numbers and nine listings carrying 04152 numbers present elements — and the catalogue itself prints a further 04152 number, 04152-38020, whose size line reads "Standard Spin-On Oil Filter", so the number prefix alone does not settle the format; the listing's own size line does. A parts order therefore starts from the listing the old part's number resolves to, and reads its size line and construction lines there — one more reason the catalogue's matching rule starts from the number rather than the model badge.
Ordering either format
One enquiry can carry both formats — quote the OE number per line, cans and elements together, with quantities. The oil filter catalogue hub collects the range, and samples are free if a format is new to your stock and you want to handle the parts before committing.
